When an SME Should Hire a Fractional CMO Instead of a Marketing Director
A full-time Marketing Director is a six-figure commitment. Here is how to tell whether you need the seniority or the headcount.

Most businesses between ten and two hundred and fifty employees reach a point where the marketing function has outgrown its founder and outpaced its executor. The question is what to hire next.
You probably need seniority, not another pair of hands
If your team can execute but nobody owns the plan, hiring another executive is the wrong fix. If you have a plan nobody is delivering, you need delivery. Diagnose which side of that line you are on before you write a job advert.
The cost comparison is honest
A capable Marketing Director in the North West costs meaningfully more than salary alone once you add recruitment, benefits, tooling and the ramp-up period. A fractional arrangement gives you the same level of thinking for one or two days a week, with no recruitment risk and a much faster start.
What a Fractional CMO owns
Strategy, budget allocation, the measurement framework, agency and supplier performance, sales and marketing alignment, and the development of your existing team. Not day-to-day content production.
When a full-time hire is right
When the plan is stable, the budget is significant, the team is large enough to manage daily, and the business needs a permanent internal voice at leadership level. At that point a fractional arrangement should be helping you write the job spec and onboard the hire.
What good looks like in the first ninety days
An honest audit, a written strategy with named priorities, a reporting dashboard the board trusts, and one or two quick commercial wins that fund the rest.
The point of fractional leadership is not to save money. It is to buy senior judgement earlier than your headcount plan would otherwise allow.
