AI in SME Marketing: Where It Genuinely Helps and Where It Wastes Money

AI will not write your strategy. It will remove a surprising amount of the work that currently stops your team executing it.

There is a great deal of noise about AI in marketing and comparatively little clarity about return. Having implemented it across a B2B marketing function, here is my working view.

Where it earns its keep

Research and synthesis, first drafts of technical content that a specialist then corrects, keyword and search intent clustering, summarising customer calls into usable insight, building reporting commentary, and automating the small internal tasks that quietly consume a marketing executive's week.

Where it disappoints

Anything that depends on judgement about your market, your positioning or your commercial priorities. Unedited AI content also performs poorly in search precisely because it says what everyone else says.

The search shift matters more than the content shift

Buyers increasingly get answers inside search results and assistants rather than clicking through. That rewards businesses with clear, structured, genuinely expert content and punishes thin pages built for volume. Practically, this means better schema, clearer answers, and real expertise on the page.

A sensible starting point

Pick three repetitive internal tasks, automate those, measure the hours returned, then reinvest that time into the strategic work that was previously being skipped. That is a far better first project than a content factory.

Used well, AI raises your team's output without lowering your standards. Used lazily, it produces more of the content that was already being ignored.
